For many Auckland properties, the best result comes from using both machines at different stages. A small excavator handles the digging and difficult ground; a Bobcat-style skid steer takes care of spreading, loading and final shaping. Choosing one machine for the whole job can work on straightforward sites, but it is not always the fastest or most cost-effective way to get the job done properly.
Excavator versus Bobcat for Driveways: the key difference
In driveway conversations, “Bobcat” commonly means a skid steer loader or tracked loader, rather than a machine made by one specific manufacturer. It is a compact loader with a front bucket that pushes, carries, spreads and loads material efficiently. An excavator has a boom, stick and bucket that allow it to dig down, reach out and work accurately around obstacles.
That difference matters from the first cut. A skid steer is excellent at removing loose material, shifting aggregate and trimming a formation that is already close to level. It is less suited to deep, precise excavation, especially where the driveway needs to be cut into a slope, existing hard material needs breaking, or services run nearby.
An excavator can dig to a controlled depth, shape a trench for drainage, remove tree roots and work from one position while reaching into tight or uneven areas. Access is equally important. Consider gate widths, overhead power lines, turning space, parked vehicles, neighbouring fences and whether trucks can safely deliver and remove material. A machine that fits through the gate is not necessarily the machine that can complete the work safely or efficiently once it is inside.
Also consider water. The driveway should direct runoff away from buildings and avoid creating a nuisance for neighbours or the road reserve. Work near a vehicle crossing, public footpath or road may involve requirements that should be checked before work begins.
